What is reflexology?

Reflexology is an ancient, natural and holistic therapy. It is based on the principle that the entire body is mapped out on the feet. Specific points, known as 'reflex points' correspond to organs, glands and systems of the body. By stimulating these points with pressure techniques, therapeutic changes can occur in the body helping to bring the body into a state of equilibrium - known as homeostasis. Reflexology is a powerful relaxing therapy for both mind and body.

Regular reflexology treatments late in pregnancy can help contribute to a spontaneous onset and good progress during labour. A treatment session may also be useful to help stimulate labour and avoid medical induction if you go past your due date.

A UK maternity hospital recently conducted a trial comparing outcomes of 100 pregnant women who received a reflexology treatment in the 40th week of pregnacy with women who received no treatment. The results showed that the women who received a treatment had on average a 4 hour shorter labour, had reduced birth interventions and used less analgesia.

Alison qualified with a Diploma in Reflexology in 2011 and will soon be offering Reflexology Treatments.
